Etty Hillesum: A Very Modern Mystic
A Dutch Jew living through the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, her Diaries show Etty Hillesum to be a modern woman of complexity, passion and culture. The record of increasingly brutal months of restriction and finally her detention in Auschwitz also reveals a growing relationship with God which nurtures her own spiritual flourishing and becomes a source of joy and sustenance for those around her.
Immersing ourselves in Etty’s words and focussing more deeply on several of her themes we discover how her experience can be meaningful for our own present.
